Studio Atlas bases its design philosophy upon the understanding that the world our students are designing for is naturally diverse, extraordinary in its possibility and inspirational in the manner to which we can draw upon its inherent, complex beauty.

However, we are inhabiting the time of the Anthropocene, where climate collapse is evidenced everywhere and our approach to architectural design is required to meet the future needs of every person globally.

Architectural education is also changing. Studio Atlas seeks to develop an atmosphere where our students are naturally confident and inherently competent. Being able to meet the demands of an extended period of education and the challenges of future professional life are paramount to us.

Our studio philosophy seeks to meet the pedagogical needs of students by placing the idea of embodied experience as the primary tenet for understanding the world our students encounter.

Building knowledge, developing experience, and learning professional behaviour through our innovative and flexible pedagogy is supported through the innovative SuperStudio educational model. The SuperStudio system is our greatest asset.

Creating a barrier free studio culture where students have freedom to develop personal philosophies of inclusivity, creates routes to the profession for everyone, regardless of their background.

Becoming an architect is a transformational experience. The positive aspects of learning architecture are the key drivers within every characteristic of our studios educational perspective.

The innovative approaches to teaching we collectively explore as a school; supports the uniqueness of the pedagogical system the Belfast School of Architecture and the Built Environment leads. The school is world leader in its approach to architectural education and is confidently developing this methodology and the means to which our students develop as confident professionals aligned with and practically informing the changes in architectural education.

As the professional world of architecture continues to develop, and the pedagogy of learning architecture begins to reflect upon its possible future change, the competencies of our graduates remain our focus. This is manifest through the skills they learn, the knowledge they develop, the experiences they acquire and the professional behavior’s they espouse.

Central to our studio philosophy is the development of key graduate attributes which will sustain our students as they enter the global professional world. The development of student confidence, digital fluency and inclusivity are core values within our studio. Our aim is to ensure graduate competencies that are fundamental to the diverse requirements of architectural graduates.

The freedom of expression required for our students to aspire to be the broadest, most creative individual they can become, is shaped by the clear guidance set out by ARB and RIBA. Atlas will continue to enable barrier free learning with the aim of unlocking the potential each individual student holds.
