WaterLands II: RiverRun

Teaching Staff
Professor Paul Clarke, Professor of Architectural Design
Peter McNie, Teaching Fellow

Following the journey of the River Bann from Lough Neagh towards the Atlantic, the WaterLands SuperStudio this year explored a series of different locations such as Toome, Church Island on Lough Beg, the Coleraine Campus of Ulster University and unique historical places such as Mountsandel. First year was about making a series of small buildings in big landscapes; second year a narrative of three different scales related to artists and exhibiting art in the landscape; third and fifth year working together in a creative tango of innocence and expertise on a series of urban/rural conditions. The year started by imagining the studio space as an abstraction of Lough Neagh, related directly to Seamus Heaney’s Lough Neagh Sequence, producing a series of water drawings that collectively mapped out an unseen cartography of Northern Ireland’s biggest WaterLands: at the centre of its landscape, and which acts as a cultural and physical omphalos.
